About Me.

This is me, Alina Ehret, maker and repairer of violin family instruments in Sheffield, UK

I grew up in a music-loving family in Germany, where instruments of all kind were a constant presence. Playing music soon became essential to me.

At 16, I played cello in a baroque quartet with three other young women. The experience deepened my love of music, but when we participated in competitions at the national level, I also recognized the challenges of a musician’s life. Now I only really play for fun and have discovered the world of folk music since moving to the UK.

Aside from playing music, I have always had a passion for arts and crafts. As a kid, you could often find me hiding in my room for hours, drawing or crafting with all sorts of materials.

By entering the world of instrument making I found a way to merge my interests in music and crafts.

I studied Violin Making and Repair at the Newark School of Instrument Making. Aside from making and repairing violins I had the opportunity to explore various aspects of the craft.

I experimented with building a baroque violin and a viola da gamba and discovered a passion for decorative carving. It's where I found a way to express my voice as an artist as well as a craftswoman.

My third year was dedicated to making a cello, a process with which I felt deeply connected as a cellist.

In 2023 I graduated receiving a first-class degree with honours.

After finishing the course, I moved to Sheffield where I share a workshop with three other instrument makers. Check out their websites here:

In the two years after graduating, I gained more experience by building a cello with Tony Padday and working on various making projects for Antoine Gourdon.

In 2024 I travelled to South Africa with the educational project CIME to join the Mzansi National Orchestra on tour. We maintained and cared for the orchestra’s instruments, built a violin publicly during their concerts, and supported the Arco music project for children in the Prince Albert township.

When I'm not in the workshop or crafting away at something, you will find me enjoying the sun in the garden, on a walk in the Peak District, at folk sessions, social dances, up a climbing wall, in the kitchen or at festivals.
